Faded Elegance: Photographs of Havana by Michael Eastman consists of twenty-nine, 6 x 7 1/2 ft. photographs taken by the artist between 1999 and 2010. Eastman explores Havana’s changing cultural landscape in his images of the city’s architecture and lush interiors, ravaged by the effects of time. His large-scale photographs evoke the nostalgia and wealth of a bygone era, while shedding light on the harsh economic realities faced in present day Cuba.

Ethnographer and photographer Edward S. Curtis is best known for his ambition to chronicle the lives of Native Americans at the turn of the twentieth century. Curtis was born in Wisconsin, in 1868, and raised in Minnesota and Washington State, where he developed a deep appreciation for the American landscape. During his twenties, Curtis established a successful portrait studio in Seattle, which established his reputation. Fusing his interest in nature with a passion for exploration, Curtis’s expeditions ultimately led to numerous interactions with Native American tribes. In documenting various tribes across the country, Curtis gained national recognition, which helped him procure funding from J.P. Morgan.
This fall, FMoPA will present an exhibition about the life and times of Frida Kahlo. Kahlo was born and raised in Mexico, but by the 1920s, she and husband Diego Rivera occupied the center of a vibrant artistic, intellectual, and political scene in Mexico. For example, American artist Edward Weston traveled to Mexico City in 1923 along with his lover, photographer Tina Modotti, and shared his artistic experimentation with the painter Kahlo. This exhibition will showcase important images from Lola Álvarez Bravo, Lucienne Bloch, Imogen Cunningham, Leo Matiz, Nickolas Muray, Emmy Lou Packard, Guillermo Zamora, among others and showcase snapshots of the political figures Kahlo turned to for inspiration and friendship.
At once a seemingly untouched virgin land and a territory of limitless opportunity for development, the American landscape has always fueled the imagination of artists. As rapid industrialization began to threaten some of America’s most striking wilderness areas, President Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919) and naturalist John Muir (1838–1914) led the urgent call to protect the land on a national scale. Photography was not only an aid to the cause of conservation but also a way to popularize the newly formed tourist sites, aligning nature with American values.
Comprised primarily of photographs depicting National and State Parks, this exhibition explores the relationships between photographers and the American landscape. The earliest date from the 1860s, including albumen prints by Carleton Watkins and William H. Jackson, and one of the most recent is a colossal view of the Florida Everglades by Clyde Butcher.

Witness to War is an exhibition of photographs from The Ringling Museum’s permanent collection and the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience at Florida State University. It honors U.S. veterans through a gripping visual account of WWII via the lenses of soldier-photographers who documented their first-hand experiences at war. Comprised of snapshots, candid portraits, and pictures documenting action on the front lines, the photographs from these personal collections gifted by veterans offer us a unique historical perspective of WWII from individual servicemen, a perspective not always in step with officially sanctioned press photographs from the era, or the more iconic World War II photographs that have come to symbolize the War in the public’s consciousness.
