Germany?

Would you like to take a photographers trip to Germany? Would you like to attend the world’s largest photo equipment show (Photokina)? If you have any thoughts that this may be something you are interested in, please read a little more.

I am presently investigating the possibility of taking a group of interested photographers to Germany in the fall of 2014. While nothing is carved in stone at this time, I am conducting the feasibility of such a trip. The present thinking is leaving on Sunday September 21, 2014 to arrive in Germany on Monday the 22nd. Trip length would be about 10 days (still under consideration). Fall is a great time to visit Germany, it is shoulder season and tourist attractions that are closed in the winter are still open. The weather is nice and there are no crowds (except around Photokina).

Photokina opens on Tuesday the 23rd. To see all of Photokina requires several days, but we are thinking 2 or maybe 3 days. Other places under discussion include Munich, Berlin, the Moselle Valley (can you say great wine), Heidelburg Castle, Bavaria, Neuschwanstein Castle (fairy tale castle that inspired Disney), Rothenberg (almost unchanged from the middle ages), Hitler’s Eagles Nest (simply amazing), Mespelbrunn Castle, Oberammergau, etc. etc. Depending upon costs maybe an overnight stay at Anholt Castle, which is privately owned, has an amazing art collection and still has water in the moat.

The travel coordinator I am working with is also going to try arranging an open return date for those who would like to spend a few days on your own before returning home.

If you are interested please let me know. This will not be a commitment, I am only seeing if there is enough interest to move forward.

Please email, call or stop in to Lake Shore Camera Exchange and see me: phone 727-938-6594

Mario Algaze: Cuba 1999-2000

Cuba 1999 – 2000:  Photography by Mario Algaze

Exhibition Dates:
October 18, 2012 – January 6, 2013

Look, but don’t touch. Reach, but don’t grasp. Dream, but don’t wake up. That is how an exile feels about the homeland he cannot reclaim, and that is how Mario Algaze feels about Cuba.  Born in Cuba in 1947, he remembers a happy childhood in the well-to-do Art Deco Havana neighborhood of Miramar. He can recall “the smell of seaweed and saltwater washing on the rocks.”
It was a magical time. He remembers his mother taking him to the ballet, and he remembers seeing the Alec Guinness movie, Our Man in Havana being filmed on the streets of the city.  All this ended when he was 13 years old. That’s when he was brought to Miami by his parents. He was 52 years old before he was able to return.

The Importance of Being Photographed
August 20 – December 15, 2012

The Importance of Being Photographed takes its cue from the gift from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and Oscar Wilde’s seminal play “The Importance of Being Earnest.” Although separated by an ocean and almost a century, both Warhol and Wilde were interested in examining celebrity, beauty, sexuality, privacy, and despair. The American photographers in this exhibition continue to examine those themes, often revealing a rapport between the artist and his or her subject. Artists include: Tina Barney, Dawoud Bey, Katy Grannan, Jason Lazarus, Malerie Marder, Ryan McGinley, Catherine Opie, and Alec Soth. The Importance of Being Photographed is curated by Jane Simon, USFCAM Curator, and organized by the USF Contemporary Art Museum, Tampa.
