Bay Area Photographic Exhibits

Florida Museum of Photographic Art

March 10th, 2011 through May 27th, 2012

Andy Warhol and Friends

For the inaugural exhibition in its new home at the Cube at Rivergate Plaza, the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts welcomes Andy Warhol & Friends.
This landmark exhibition comes from the Andy Warhol Museum, one of the four Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh,
Included in Andy Warhol & Friends are vividly hued screen prints as well as photographs and photo booth strips from 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. They feature portraits of such celebrities as John Wayne, Liza Minnelli, Sting, Mick Jagger, Jack Nicholson, Sylvester Stallone, Grace Jones and Dennis Hopper.  Also included are Warhol’s famous self-portraits.

The Museum of Fine Arts Saint Petersburg

Picturing a New Society: Photographs from the Soviet Union 1920s–1980s

April 14 through August 19, 2012

This exhibition explores contradictions between idealistic images and life in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).  Photography was a key tool to promote party goals both internally and abroad, but did not always reflect reality. The photographs in Picturing a New Society describe virtues for a society that often existed only within pictures. Agriculture and rural areas, industry, the military, and the youth of the USSR were cornerstones of Soviet narratives of progress, and are represented in this exhibition. Photographers include Alexander Ustinov, Max Alpert, Emanuel Evzerikhin, and Georgi Zelma, among others.  Photographs like these are rare: to Soviet photographers, images were tools to inform and influence the public, therefore many were discarded after their message was disseminated.

Picturing a New Society is drawn from recent donations of over 200 Soviet photographs by Howard Schickler and Janice Tuckwood. These remarkable photographs, the first of their kind added to the collection, bring new depth to the MFA’s photography holdings.

Sitter and Subject in Nineteenth-Century Photography
Ongoing

In conjunction with the 23rd Daguerreian Society Annual Symposium to be held in St. Petersburg October 27-30, this exhibition features some 60 nineteenth-century daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, and tintypes. It addresses several facets of the public’s insatiable appetite for portraits of loved ones and strangers alike. Flawless artistic and studio portraits will be on view. Highlights include a rare portrait of James Cutting, the inventor of the ambrotype, by Mathew Brady and a pair of important full-plate daguerreotype portraits by Southworth and Hawes on loan from The Dandrew-Drapkin Collection

Sherry Williamson and Patti Krumeich
are having a show
For May

A “meet the artist” reception will be held Thursday, May 3, from 6-9pm
at the library, located at 4125 East Lake Road , Palm Harbor , FL.

Three talented local photographers, Patti Krumeich, Sherry Williamson and Susan Knodle will be displaying their photographic art for the month of May at the East Lake Library in Palm Harbor .

A variety of themes and photographic techniques will be displayed.

Sherry’s love of nature and travel are reflected in her work. She also enjoys creating regional and urban work extending throughout Florida . Her works include photographic prints on canvas media.

Nature, wildlife and scenery are where Patti’s photographic passion revolves. She attempts to capture the “spirit” of her subjects and does so using digital painting methods. This gives her photos an artistic digital effect.

Susan’s favorite type of photography is HDR, short for high dynamic range. This produces a different “look and feel” and makes the colors vivid while accenting small details within a photo.
